GOLF COACHING
Putting
To aid understanding and how to learn has to be done long term and continually. Proper coaching is not just another lesson and then ‘pick’ out the bones to make you better.
The aims for my students are that everything we do is clear and achievable. That their minds are clear of technical thoughts during a tournament or round of golf and that they fully understand my input.
Learning Styles
Enabling the student to learn correctly, in their learning style, is so important. We learn more effectively if we receive the right signals and information in the order that is appropriate to us. People who like to read or see things, those who like to hear and those who learn by actually doing it are all styles. We can be a mixture and it is down to the coach to identify how the student can learn more effectively.
Discussion/Meet/Student Assessment form
I prefer to meet my students before we start working, to ensure that the student is happy with me, feels comfortable and at ease. We need to establish verbal feedback. We can learn so much from talking about it, rather than immediately sticking a putter in your hand. This is where we complete the student’s written assessment form. It has been devised to make a record of what the student believes are their strengths and weaknesses and where they feel they need to improve.

Assessment
We need to break the content of our sessions into different areas, in the right order to ensure we understand each other and the coach/student working relationship is established. It is important to obtain the evidence and assess where the student is at the precise time and what needs to be done to make the improvements long term.
The evidence is gained via visual, video, discussion and Sam Lab data – this is so important and long term. Identify the priority of where we work and how we work.
We decide on our agreed Aims, Intentions, Goal’s, Target’s and set the work ethics.
Practical working sessions
Now is time to make things happen, to priorities the areas that need focus and improvements.
The areas of development are: -
- Aim
- Alignment,
- Posture,
- Spine Angle
- Ball position
- Stroke path,
- Tempo & Timing
- The equipment.
The time of the first session can vary but is normally around two to three hours, it is appropriate to what needs to be done. Once we have established the working agenda and long term development then we will understand what is needed to achieve our goals.
The sessions will be backed up with a full Student Case study so that you are aware of what needs doing, the drills, the videos and advice.
Repeat Visit and sessions
To ensure long term development and that the results are being achieved we need to revisit our actions and progress – i will supply: -
- Video,
- Visual,
- Sam Lab (Science & Motion is an analysis and training system based on an accurate ultrasound measurements)
- Reflecting on the development so far.
- Arrangements can be made for us to meet at events and it is important for me to see how you perform on the golf course in tournament conditions. What is occurring on the course, your approach and the mental state of the player?

COACHING SHOWCASE
During a lesson with me I have to make so many visual identifications and use of video is so important. To get the correct results of what is happening during the stroke I use the SAM Putt Lab which is a fantastic piece of kit! As you’ll see with one of my players Dani Alonso that the SAM data and the photo to the left that the impact is a descending blow and the grey areas show the ten putts – not consistent and not in the grey areas as we would like. We need a great impact to deliver a better ball roll.
Check out the photo and the SAM data below and there is a slight alteration to his set up, has then allowed a more effective impact and better consistency. Some great work during the lesson and i am sure Dani will benefit ‘big time!’ Dani is playing on the Alps tour and events across Spain and France – this can make the difference to his putting, his score and then the tour he plays on.

Thank you to Dani for his permission to use this information and to SAM putt lab manufacturers and inventors http://www.scienceandmotion.com/ cheers Christian J
