UK visit
A fantastic weeks visit to the UK, travelling over 1,000 miles.
Great to meet up with the 'gb' putting academy coaches Gavin Forsyth, Tristan Schilstra, Paul Adams at the Warwickshire Golf club where we checked out Jamie Donaldson's Aimpoint techniques.
Also joining us were a number of my professional players George Woolgar, Paul Reed and Lee Clarke.
Most of us managed a sneaky over night stay Sutton Coldfield sampling a few beers and a proper curry.
Great discussions about the future of the Academy, keep watching.
During the week trips out to see the lads at the Europro event at Astbury Hall in Shropshire, nice location, good event. Good to see Matthew Evans all ready for the season too.
From there to Porthcawl to meet up with Harry Casey to prepare him for the Welsh Amateur Championship. What a great location, lovely course and a place that has been the scene of many tournaments in the past. The Senior tour are there later next month, go and check it out, see how Miguel Angel Martin figures out!
Off then to Girton Golf Club in Cambridgeshire, met up with resident pro Alan Fletcher. What a top bloke, go and see him if you need help with your game, he has so many good ideas and his approach to fitness is exciting, i didn't stay too long on that area of discussion.
There i met two of the young amateurs i work with Amber Ratcliffe and Harry Ellis. Two England players who are destined for stardom on the professional circuit.
Please take a look at a few photos from my visit, most of all have a look at some of the players set up.
Fancy being able to putt like a professional? Well give me a call and i can definitely help you there.

Well Done Harry Casey
Well done to Harry Casey for his victory at the Hampshire Salver 21st and 22nd April 2013 - two rounds of -3 with 27 and 29 putts!
Now that is great going!
Also, well done for being selected for the England v Spain tournament in Barcelona next week!
English champion Ellis so close to title double
Harry Ellis came close to adding the French International Boys Championship to his English crown but was beaten 4 and 2 by Germany’s Dominic Foos in the 36-hole final at Le Touquet.
In a match of two halves, Ellis generally held the upper hand in the morning round, getting to 3-up after 13 holes before going into lunch with a one-hole advantage.
But it was a different story in the afternoon. Foos levelled at the first hole then made the decisive move by winning three holes-in-a-row from the seventh and adding another at the 11th to be 4-up. Although Ellis won the 13th, it was too steep a hill to climb and the end came at the 16th where Foos closed out his 4 and 2 success.
Overall it was a successful sortie for the English youngsters, four filling the top seven spots in the qualifying but that meant they were all in the same half of the match play draw.
Jack Singh Brar, Ellis’s Hampshire colleague, departed in the first round against Jeppe Andersen by 2 holes but the Dane lost in the quarter finals to Ashton Turner, who had claimed a 2 and 1 win over Vitek Novak of the Czech Republic in round one and a 1-hole success against Sweden’s Fredrik Nilehn in the second.
Derbyshire’s Bradley Moore overcame Jonas Liebich of Germany 4 and 3 then French international Kenny Subregis 4 and 2 before bowing out to Ellis 3 and 1 in the quarter finals. Ellis reached the last eight with wins over Alan de Bondt of Belgium and Frenchman Pierre Mazier.
In another all-English clash in the semi-finals, Ellis came out on top by 1-hole against Turner to set up the final with Foos.
The Nations Cup, decided over the two stroke play qualifying rounds, saw Sweden 1 come out on top on 138, four strokes better than Norway 1 with England 2, comprising Robert Burlison, Bobby Keeble and Bradley Moore, and Italy 1 third on 143. England 1, made up of Ellis, Singh Brar and Turner, finished on 144.
Match Play results:
1st Rd: A Turner (Eng) bt V Novak (Czk Rep) 2&1; J Andersen (Den) bt J Singh Brar (Eng) 2 holes; B Moore (Eng) bt J Liebich (Ger) 4&3; H Ellis (Eng) bt A de Bondt (Bel) 3&2.
2nd Rd: Turner bt F Nilehn (Swe) 1 hole; Moore bt K Subregis (Fra) 4&2; Ellis bt P Mazier (Fra) 4&3
Quarter Finals: Turner bt Andersen 5&4; Ellis bt Moore 3&1.
Semi-Finals: Foos (Ger) bt P Melching (Fra) 3&2; Ellis bt Turner 1 hole.
Final (36 holes): Foos bt Ellis 4&2
Aimpoint & putting technique seminar
Dear All,
AIMPOINT & PUTTING TECHNIQUE SEMINAR - Spain April 2013
Mark Sweeney, Jamie Donaldson & Glenn Billington - The importance of green reading and stroking the ball straight!
An oppurtunity has arisen where I have the honour to be co conducting a seminar with two of the worlds top coaches who focus on green reading.
Mark Sweeney and Jamie Donaldson from AimPoint will be here in Spain and are willing to pass on their experience on how to become a top class green reader. Their fundamentals are similar to mine - ‘we pick the aim and we hit the ball on that line’.
The dates for the seminar are likely to be the 26th and 27th April 2013 - yes, in three weeks!
We are arranging a quality location in Spain and will forward information as soon as possible together with costing and the agenda.
We need to establish who is interested in this fantastic oppurtunity to hear from three experts in putting in one location. This may never happen again, so make the most of it!
For the Coach and professional player please pass this information to your students, of course we need quick replies as spaces are very limited.
Reply to me on email address please info@glennbillington.co.uk or call +34 664 319 382
Putting Set up with Daniel Moss Silva
Lets check out the putting position
The set position in putting is the most important thing you need to remember. Get this right and you’ll be a solid, strong putter whio hits the ball on line.
Take a look at the top photo, these are the two set up positions seen with Daniel Moss Silva. Daniel was struggling with his putting and not able to hit the ball on line.
On the course i could see that his position from down the line view was on his heels. Check how the line from his ankle to his knee is straight. There should be an angle in the line, to set the solid base. The angle then goes from the knees to the hips.
Check how how a good base is very similar in the driver set up and the putter. All we need to do is tilt at the hips to get into a putting position from the drive one.
Keep this in mind and see how it can develop your putting.

Harry Ellis
Harry Ellsi is at it again, he has just reached the final of the French Amateur.
Good to Harry and bring home the trophy!

THE SIX FUNDAMENTALS OF PUTTING - SET UP & AIM WITH GLENN BILLINGTON
During my time in coaching I have realised that players can be so frustrated about their game. Why? I thought it was because they wanted to improve for enjoyment but I was wrong really.
When people come for a lesson they want instant improvement but not many will put the amount of work in that will give them long term understanding and improvement, guaranteed.
One of my first questions to my pupils is, ‘How much work will you be putting in or are you wasting your time and money?’ Well, I believe in honesty and I do not want to give people false hope.
If you think it’s bad with just amateurs then you are wrong. Some professionals expect miracles, but from who? I cannot do miracles; it has to be a joint effort between player and coach. A lesson is not just half hour doing some putting. It has to be structured and leading to an understanding of how to make putting an art and repetitive.
FUNDAMENTAL NUMBER ONE
SET UP & AIM
Make yourself solid and square to the target
If our set up is poor then how will we make the ball go straight, have good timing and the rotation of the shoulders work like a pendulum, well, they won’t!
Your set up has to be solid, strong and all the angles right to make you impact with the ball square to your intended target.
So, today, make your set up as wide as your driver stance. This will help you keep your hips square and your shoulders aligned correctly. So much more balance and this will stop you moving your head and every other part of your body, keep it simple!
The club aim has to be square to the intended target. The intended target is a point for your initial aim, not the hole; pick a point where the ball will roll over. This is even more important for left to right and right to left putts. Keep it simple.
Take a look at the photos and see how you can make sure your set up and aim can improve. It is not difficult. The professional practices this to get the feeling of solidity; look at Luke Donald, one of the best short game players out there, how solid is in for his putting?
So, this is a start, try it, see what happens, no more head and body movement, it will be easier to get into position and you will impact square to the target more often.
If you need any further help then please do not hesitate to ask, email info@glennbillington.co.uk
When I talk about structure I talk about the fundamentals. If you read the previous article you will see that they are really the most important factor for you and me.
This time we talk about Set & aim. This is the main foundations for a players putting. Wouldn’t you agree?
Thank you to Gavin Forsyth and Oliver Morton - two of gb putting academies coach’s

THE CORRECT PUTTER FOR YOU
Some of the more important factors to be considered when selecting a Putter are: -
LOFT, LIE ANGLE AND PUTTER LENGTH!
Most manufacturers produce Putter Heads with LOFT from 2.5 to 4 Degrees. Although you may not notice it, your ball is always sitting down when it comes to rest on the putting surface. The LOFT of the Putter is designed to get the ball up out of it’s depression and rolling quickly towards the hole. Putter manufacturers such sa Odyssey always have information about the LOFT of their Putters on their websites and blogs!
The LIE ANGLE (see above) of the putter is essential in putter selection as it needs to be sitting squarely on the putting surface to ensure the ball can start off square to your intended target line. Putters that are sitting HEEL UP will always deviate RIGHT of the target, while Putters that sit TOE UP will always deviate LEFT of the target. So always ensure your Putter sites SQUARE for putts that roll TRUE.
PUTTER LENGTH - The LENGTH of putter you select will be determinded by a number of factors. Firstly, select a putter which suits your particular putting stroke. Secondly, choose a putter which will allow you to play without discomfort. The putter is the club we use most in a round of practise, so if you suffer with back pain, choose a length of putter that is comfortble.
Finally, shorter length putters will help you achieve a more consistent putting stroke. The average length of Putter on the PGA Tour is 33 inches, which is 2 inches less than most putters available in shops. Why? Because shorter putters are far easier to control!

Good putting posture and how to achieve it - with gb putting academy
Take a look at the photos of Paul Reed (Golf Professional) in a training session at El Valle Golf Resort in Murcia Spain with Glenn Billington (Putting Coach). No, he doesnt normally do his hair this way, the wind was really strong :-)
It is important to ensure you get into a solid position, to enable the correct posture which will allow the putter to rotate around the body, the spine angle is the pivotal point.

Testimonial - Lee and Kieron Fowler
To Glenn Billington and the Valencian Golf Federation.
I was hoping to be able to get to see you all personally but I'm just not going to have the time.
I would like to thank you for your support you've given Kieron Fowler over the past 5 yrs.
The team worked well and due to this Kieron has to be grateful to you all, as am I.
I leave for England early next Wednesday.
Please accept my apologies for not getting to see you in person and buy you a much deserved drink or 2!
I would like to take this opportunity in wishing you the very best for the future professionally and personally.
My thanks and best wishes Lee Fowler
Testimomial from Bernat Cortilla
Glenn,
Ferran and I enjoyed a lot the experience to do the masterclass with you, he explained to his golf teachers all the things that he has learned and how to improve the set up, grip, rhythm...and the teachers agree absolutely your tips. He is practicing with his new posture every day. He will try to do your putting performance drills in the week-end because during the week he has to practice the exercises his teacher recommend. I will send you the results of the exercises and the photos aswell.
Thank you for all the videos and photos you have sent and thank you very much for all your support.
We keep in contact.
Thanks Coach!

gb Affiliate Coaching Experience - by Gavin Forsyth
Having just finished my short stay in Murcia with Glenn, I can honestly say the experience has hugely influenced my coaching philosophy and ideals as well really developed my own performance and feel within my putting.
The player I was and am now are two different people: the SAM data, GASP video evidence and the perception I have over the ball and the understanding I have gained will back that up no ends.
The whole process and its influence on my performance was met, I believe to the changes made in my Set up and grip which then were able to influence the 5 other fundamentals gb Putting Academies uses at the centre of all its coaching.
Throughout the process Glenn mentored me and really delivered in allowing the process to be tailored around what I wanted out of the visit. My putting coaching, use of SAM and approach to the process has been greatly improved and influenced.
I do feel that working with elite performers can only be enhanced with a long term process in mind, players need to be able to develop set up and feel changes and be able to adopt these in a variety of different environments, whether it be in front of a mirror in the studio, on the practise putting green or during tournament play.
Developing my coaching through thinking for myself and having open discussions with Glenn as well as using visual, kinesthetic and quantatative data and relating other players performance and SAM data to my own accelerated my learning and gave me an excellent grounding on becoming an Affiliate Putting Coach.
I am really looking forward to working with Glenn in the future and starting my journey as a recognised putting specialist in my own right. I would highly recommend this training to any coach looking to develop their putting and coaching abilities and having the opportunity to work alongside Glenn will be a great tool for any reputable coach.

Roque Moya
Congratulations to Roque Moya for his performance in the national Spanish event at Mar menor Golf Resort the weekend of Saturday 22nd February 2014.
The 14 year old Valencian player from Castellon came second in his age group and 8th overall.
Taking into account that Roque, his father and Glenn had been working on Roques putting the Thursday before the tournament shows the quality and class this junior player has.
Take a look at the photo shown above - the first is Roques set up before we made some improvement. Look how solid the set is now and thus natural rotation is occurring.
Good luck for the remainder of the season Roque and very well done.

Europe Win the Ryder Cup
Well done to the European team in the Ryder Cup. What a great come back, there was some amazing golf but I was a little concerned about the putting of a couple of our players? I know that nerves does play a lot of cause for this but the greens were amazing and all they needed to do was hit the ball straight on their target line. Why so much movement at impact, why did they expect to miss and why take the putt if you were not happy.
There were class acts amongst the team but Ian Poulter was a credit to everyone. I would love to shake him by the hand for leading with such great spirit and guts! The best Ryder Cup ever and one to be judged for years, the Americans will not be looking forward to 2014 will they?
Valencia Federation

The highlight of my year so far in coaching was a meeting with the Valencia Golf Federation team director. I have been offered a fantastic role within the team, one that I just cannot turn down. Miguel Angel Martin
Miguel Angel Martin of the European Senior Tour shoots four under par in the final round of the French Rivera and finished in sixteenth position following a poor start.
Miguel and Glenn Billington starting working together in June 2012 and since then Miguel has moved up the senior tour order of merit at a rapid rate and finished in twenty ninth position. This has been down to a tremendous improvement in his putting. At one stage Miguel was in 110th position in putts per round but finished in 61st position on 30.7 putts per round, next year he will be a contender!
GB Putting Academy Asia Tour for 2013
The GB Academy is growing at a remarkable rate, we have just had another coach from Gran Canaria join the Academy, with his training starting in December. Things are looking great for our Asian tour in march covering Sri lanka, India, Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore! (Maybe Australia too, watch this space). GB Putting Academy is already firmly placed in Spain and it now looks like each region will have one of our academies, very soon. This is all great news for the Academy, we are booking new coach training in for Jan and Feb already, so if you are looking to join the GB Putting Academy call us now to secure your place.
Carlos Aguilar
Carlos Aguilaris showing some great form on the European Challenge tour and lies just outside automatic qualification to the main tour. With events left he is only a few points away from qualification.
George Woolgar is showing improvement and he is hoping that the plaster cast will be removed this week so that he is ready for the second phase of European tour school. His hopes are that automatic qualification can still happen, good luck George.
A busy month for the GB Putting Academy
Glenn is travelling for a few weeks now from the 15th October, with some very interesting places to visit....
On Monday 15th October I am off to Heathrow for a flight to Sri Lanka where I am preparing a clinic and coaching for an amateur event there at the Royal Colombo Golf Club which is sponsored by Sri Lankan airways. Take a look at the golf club web site, interesting and the second Royal Golf club to be built. I am looking forward to working with the juniors at the golf club too, getting to know them. My aim is to set up a gb putting academy here and train their staff to provide the best putting coaching.
On the 20th October I return to the Uk and spend time with my family before I travel to Gran Canaria to meet up with Henry at the Learn & Play Golf academy at the fantastic Anfi resort. It is their official opening and we will be meeting many future students and a lot of local people who are very interested in how we plan to provide great coaching.
27th October, back to Murcia via Madrid where I have a full months coaching arranged, five new affiliate coaches are being trained. Hope they are ready for the hard work?
All in all busy times ahead but I must thank my team for their support and great work they are doing to make this happen.
The Gecko Pro tour
The Gecko Pro tour is into their second week of tournaments in the Costa Del Sol area of Spain. Their aim is to ensure that they become the top winter tour in Europe and the way they are developing this will happen in no time.
